Joann A. Fujczak Chapman

Passed on March 27, 2023
Resident of Avon, MA

Joann A. (Fujczak) Chapman died March 27, 2023 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her spouse of nearly 52 years, Paul Chapman, of Avon, they would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on 4/17. She is predeceased by her parents Walter and Stella (Bialy) Fujczak, of Holyoke and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Agnes (McKinnon) Chapman, of Avon.

Survived by her three children, Benjamin Chapman, wife Toni and grandsons Logan and Hunter of Avon; Rebecca Moore, husband Erik and granddaughter Addison and grandson Jacob of Bridgewater; and Elizabeth Westbrook, husband Stephen of Holbrook. Sister of Sam Hughes of Foxboro, Walter Fujczak of Santa Clara, CA, Robert Fujczak of Albany, NY, and sister-in-law of Patricia Chapman of Mashpee and Alan Chapman and wife Cindy of Cabot, AR.

After graduating from UMASS Amherst in 1969 she moved to Randolph with her Tri Sigma sorority sisters; collectively known as the Sigmas, who remain her dear friends. This brought her to start her teaching career at Crowley School in Avon where she met her devoted husband, Paul. After staying at home for a few years to raise their children she continued to work as an educator for many years, before retiring from Randolph Public Schools in 2007. She made an impact on students in her classroom; many of whom continued to reach out to ‘Mrs. Chapman’ long after her retirement; and many still recall her bringing in “the best coloring papers.” She developed lifelong relationships with many colleagues who became dear friends. A friend to many and a mentor to others, she left an indelible mark on everyone around her.

After marrying in 1971 Paul and Joann welcomed 3 children; Ben, Becki and Liz and 4 grandchildren; Addison, Jacob, Logan and Hunter. Joann loved being a grandmother and her grandchildren loved her just as much! She loved reading to the kids and never let a holiday pass with putting together gift bags for them all!

Joann was an avid Red Sox fan, watching every game she could! She had a varied collection of Red Sox memorabilia that covered nearly every spot in her “office” that later evolved into a playroom for the grandkids. She loved trips to the casino and you’d often find her sitting at a video poker machine sometimes putting the game above a night’s sleep! She loved giraffes and just about anything yellow-but especially her yellow VW Beetle! She was the most kind, genuine, selfless woman you could ever hope to meet. She endured so much in the later years of her life and did so with such grace you may never have known. Paul has said she never complained in 51+ years; other than about being cold! We will love and her miss forever.

Funeral from the Hurley Funeral Home, 134 So. Main St. (Rt. 28), Randolph on Monday, April 3rd at 9:15am followed by a funeral mass at St. Michael Church in Avon at 10am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 2nd from 2-6pm. Interment St. Michael’s Cemetery, Avon. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joann’s memory can be made to the Red Sox Foundation via www.redsoxfoundation.org/donate/ or the Chapman Family Scholarship that was established in 1993 for graduating students from Avon Middle High School by sending donations to a member of the Chapman Family.

Joanne and I were hired on the same day in Randolph.
We both joined the special education department and spent the next decades working with middle school children. She was a dedicated teacher who enjoyed her reading classes. She did love the Red Sox and going to Las Vegas. Her family were her pride and joy. She was missed when she retired. She was always in good mood and loved games. Sympathies to the family and her dear husband, Paul. I do remember her opening her home at the end of the school year for her colleagues. What a special person she was!
