Joan Roberts Carmichael

Passed on January 15, 2020
Resident of East Bridgewater, MA

Joan (Roberts) Carmichael, of East Bridgewater, passed away January 15, 2020. Joan was the daughter of Ethel and John Roberts of Arlington. She was the loving sister of Jack Roberts. Joan was the beloved mother of Kevin Carmichael of Reading, Kathy Murphy of Norton, Karen Flaherty of North Falmouth, and Chris Carmichael of Lakeville.

Joan was a loving, patient mother who never offered unsolicited advice. Her words of encouragement and wisdom will remain an integral part of every facet of our lives. She was a devoted grandmother who never missed an opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren. She could often be found at a baseball game, the ice rink, a concert, a play or other school activities.
Joan was such a gentle soul who always had a kind word for all. Joan always gave of herself often to her own detriment. She had a calm, serene manner that led people to seek out her advice. Joan was a true friend who was loyal to a fault. She always made time in her life for anyone in need. Many of her friends were lifelong friends because they treasured her gentle nature and rare, authentic sincerity. She had an unassuming, no-nonsense approach to life.

Joan’s passion in life was teaching which she pursued in the town of Randolph. She would often spend hours speaking with former students and their family members about how she helped them reach their full potential. Many former students often stayed in touch with her long after she retired.
Some of Joan’s favorite things in life were reading and gardening. Another passion of Joan’s was traveling. She cherished her trips with friends who were also teachers in Randolph. After she retired, she continued to travel with her mother, Ethel, and her lifelong friend, Ginny O’Brien, of Randolph who was her devoted caretaker throughout her lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Joan will never be forgotten. She left an indelible mark on each of our hearts, and her wisdom will forever be a guiding light encouraging us to become the best possible version of ourselves. We were truly blessed to have had Joan in our lives.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home, 134 So. Main St. (Rt. 28), Randolph on Thursday, January 23rd from 4-7pm followed by a service at 7pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
