Jean C. Sutherland Garland

Passed on September 22, 2023
Resident of Holbrook, MA

Jean Catherine (Sutherland) Garland, age 86, of Holbrook, passed away at home with her family by her side on September 22, 2023. She was born in Dorchester on July 13, 1937 to the late Dorothy (Fraher) and the late Robert Sutherland. She was married to the late Ronald Garland for 62 years until his death in 2022. In 1960, she and Ron moved to Plymouth Street in Holbrook and lived there for the remainder of their lives. Their home was a favorite gathering place for family and friends, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jean was a girl scout leader when her daughters were young and she participated in Holbrook Rotary events with her husband Ron, who was an active member. Jean enjoyed sewing, country music, summers at her pool, and gardening. She spent much of her time outdoors working in her yard and was a life-long avid reader. Her door was always open to visitors and there was always a pot of hot coffee on the counter. She belonged to a bowling league with her friends and in her younger years she enjoyed racquetball, skiing, and golf. She and Ron enjoyed traveling and spending time in Campton, NH and Naples, FL. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She helped with the afterschool and summer care of her grandchildren and taught every one of them how to swim.

She leaves her daughters Patricia White and her husband John of Marshfield, and Judy Lynch and her husband Michael of Holbrook. Beloved grandmother to Danielle (Lynch) Wallace and her husband Robert of Holbrook, Joseph Lynch and his partner Briana Polvere of Holbrook, Nicholas White and his wife Alyssa of Clover, SC, Isabella White of Marshfield, and the late Jonathan White. Beloved great-grandmother to Robbie and Ellie Wallace, Jaxson White, and Everly Lynch.

Jean also leaves her siblings Suzanne Wedge and her husband Robert of Brockton, James O’Donoghue and his wife Joan of Pembroke, and Joseph O’Donoghue and his wife Maureen of Dorchester. She was the sister of the late Robert Sutherland and Frank O’Donoghue. She was a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews.

A wake will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 4-7pm at Hurley Currie Funeral Home in Holbrook. Burial will be private.

Patty, Judy and family I am so saddened by the loss of your Mom. Jean was one of the most vibrant, caring, nature loving women I have ever known. Her smile and friendly nature will surely be missed. I was fortunate to be her neighbor for the last 2 years. She was always welcoming.

I bowled with Jean for more than 30 years and we became good friends. She was a good bowler and very competitive but more important she was a good friend and she will be missed❤️

My favorite Aunt. Enjoyed my times as a child with the Holbrook sleepovers and the many great cookouts.

Aunt will be missed and always loved!

    Dear Patty and John,
You have our deepest sympathy. No matter how old your parent is, death is difficult. You want them around for a longer time. Grief is not something you can go over, under, or around, but it is a process we all have to go through. May the Lord comfort all of you in the loss of your Mom.

    Best regards,
    Bob & Patricia
