James W. (Jimmy Mac) McNamara
October 18, 1940 – June 4, 2025
Resident of Plymouth - Dorchester, MA
James W. (Jimmy Mac) McNamara, of Plymouth, formerly of Dorchester, passed away June 4th at the age of 84.
Jimmy Mac was born and raised in Dorchester and Roxbury and was one of seven children. Jimmy attended several high schools in Boston before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17 where he earned his GED. He served his country honorably from 1957-1961.
Jimmy always said the luckiest day of his life was when he met the love of his life, Patricia (Tisha) Guiney of Dorchester. Jim and Tish made their homes in West Quincy, Brockton and Plymouth. They were happily married for 64 years and were never far from each other’s side.
Jimmy Mac joined the Boston Fire Department in 1971 and retired in 2003 after 32 years of distinguished service. Known as “Jimmy Mac” or “Handsome Jim” he rose through the ranks of the department as a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain and District Fire Chief in the busiest engine and ladder companies of the city. He also loved his Local 718 IAFF/PFFM union and held positions on the Boston Firefighters Credit Union and the Relief Fund.
In addition to (Patricia) the love of his life, he leaves his daughter Christine Hurley who was “the apple of his eye” and her husband James Hurley (retired Deputy Fire Chief-Randolph Fire Department) and his grandchildren Colleen Hurley-Frey (her husband Thomas Frey), Elizabeth (Libby) Hurley, Ryan Hurley, Joseph Hurley and Brendan Hurley. As well as Jillian (Obert) Pantaleo and Dennis Obert. Each one of his grandchildren made his time in this world full of pride and happiness.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 12th from 4-7pm. Burial will be held at a later date at the National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne, MA. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund would be appreciated.

We are so sorry to hear about Jimmy’s passing. The last of the 7 siblings, the end of a generation. 😪 May his memory be a blessing during this difficult time.🕯 Our thoughts and prayers are with you.🙏
“Handsome Jim” and, he was that, was one of the most popular members of the Boston Fire Department during his 32-years on the job. He and I shared the same fire district, FD-8, in the Dorchester/Mattapan neighborhood on different shifts. He usually relieved me in the morning shift-change about 07:00. One morning, as I was asleep, Jimmy surprised me at 03:00 as my relief. “Go home to your bride, Robert!” He was a “good relief!” My condolences to Jim’s wife, family and the
BFD Members.
Jim was a great guy ! John really loved him . I’m so sorry 😢
