Richard James McManus, 78, 54-year resident of Holbrook, formerly of Dorchester, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born September 7, 1945, Richard is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Grayce (Orpin) McManus of Dorchester, brother Thomas J. “T.J.” McManus, Jr., and brother-in-law Robert Fritz. 

Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laura (Donahoe) McManus, sister Marianne Fritz of Rockland, sister-in-law Pauline McManus of Braintree, daughter Joanne and husband Peter Gibbons of Plymouth, daughter Maura and husband Scott Carroll of Marshfield, daughter Meggan and husband Dominic Maloni of Wilbraham, son Matt McManus of Plymouth, son Marc and wife Andrea McManus of Rockland.

Richard was beloved “Da” to James, Ari, Maggie, Chloe, Lily, Tommy, Grace, Mackenzie, Charlie, Caroline, and Colin and cherished uncle to John, David, Michael, Melissa, Chris, Elizabeth, Dan, and Scott.

Richard was “OFD,” with his journey beginning at St. Brendan’s Parish, where he forged lifelong connections and met the love of his life, Laura. His love for Dorchester kept him visiting the Eire Pub every Monday night with his friends.

A proud graduate of Cathedral High School, Richard excelled as a three-sport athlete, with a special passion for football that remained with him throughout his life. His dedication to the game was matched by his academic achievements. After high school, Richard attended Boston College, earning a degree in Finance, and later obtained his MBA from Suffolk University.

Richard’s professional life was distinguished by a 37-year career with the IRS, where his expertise and commitment shone brightly. His service to his country was equally commendable; he served in the United States Army Reserves for six years following his undergraduate studies.

His love for golf, ignited during his decade-long tenure as a caddy at Poland Spring, was a cherished part of his life. Richard enjoyed countless rounds of golf, finding both joy and relaxation on the green.

An avid sports fan, Richard was known for his unwavering support of Boston sports teams, proudly holding season tickets to the Red Sox, Celtics, and Boston College football and basketball. He had great joy hosting his family and friends at the BC tailgates. His enthusiasm for sports extended to his personal life, where he shared many memorable moments with family and friends.

Richard’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and dedication. His kindness, humor, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Richard’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and love. He will be remembered with great affection and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home, 127 S. Franklin Street, Holbrook, MA 02343. A brief service will be held at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, in Richard’s memory.
