Lawrence J Bernier

Lawrence “Larry” J. Bernier

June 22, 1938 – July 16, 2025
Resident of Bridgewater, MA

Lawrence “Larry” Joseph Bernier, 87, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2025. Born on June 22, 1938, in Enfield, Connecticut, Larry lived a life defined by service, devotion, and quiet joy.

Larry proudly served his country for over 20 years in both the United States Navy and Coast Guard, embodying dedication, resilience, and patriotism. After his military service, he continued to exemplify these values in every role he took on — most importantly, that of husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Carole, with whom he shared 56 cherished years of marriage. Together they built a life filled with laughter, unconditional love, and unwavering support. Larry was also a loving father to his two daughters, Beth Bernier Montford and Brenda Bernier, who carry forward his strength, warmth, and sense of humor.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Florence, and his sisters, Janet and Clare. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in his two grandchildren and nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

A man of simple pleasures, Larry found joy in reading, watching football and golf, and playing cards — a passion he lovingly passed down to his grandchildren. His quiet presence, wise advice, and infectious smile enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 24th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Hurley Funeral Home, 127 South Franklin Street, Holbrook, MA. A memorial service will follow at noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Brockton Visiting Nurse Association via brocktonvna.org/donate/, in appreciation of their compassionate care.

Larry’s legacy of service, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.

I am so sad to hear of Larry’s passing. My love and sympathy goES out to Carole and all the family. His family and friends were blessed and enriched by having him in their lives. Larry was not just a friend to our family, but to us he and Carole are family. My parents loved and adored them both and in return my parents were blessed by having them as the very best of friends. I know Larry will be missed by many and I will always be grateful that my family was blessed by his presence in our lives.

My sincerest condolences to Carole and the family. Larry was a friend of my father’s since their Coast Guard days up until my father’s passing in 2021. He and my mother would often visit Carole and Larry, or vice versa. Most of the time, they would vacation somewhere together in New England, and I, when I was younger, would often tag along. Larry was one of the nicest, funniest people I’ve ever met. I’ll never forget the time in Cape Cod when we had a fire going on the beach and Larry was a little jealous that the people a few yards down had a bigger fire. Larry grabbed an old, dried Christmas tree they used to build up the dunes and threw it in the fire, which immediately rose up about 20 feet and singed my eyebrows. Our opponents down the beach left shortly after. Victory.

I will miss his joking and laughing. I will miss him teasing me about accidentally ruining his Garth Brooks cassette and jokingly accusing me of doing it on purpose because I don’t like country music. I will miss his stories about him and my father during their much wilder Coast Guard days. I have rarely seen my father happier than when he was with Larry, and I’ve never seen both my parents happier than when they were getting into some sort of trouble together. The smiles on all four in the photos we had displayed during both my parents’ wakes are proof. I hope that Larry and my parents are on some celestial New England beach somewhere drinking a beer (or 12) and laughing their asses off about old times.

My intention was for my wife, my daughter, and I to visit them soon, and I am heartbroken that I will not be able to see Larry. Carole – when things get a bit better and you’re ready to laugh about the old days, we’d love to visit you and for my daughter to get meet one of her grandpa and grandma’s best friends. We’re thinking of you and your whole family during this difficult times, but I can’t help but to smile and laugh every time I think of him.

    Love,
John, Ana, Mia Dunleavy and the spirits of John Sr. and Rita Dunleavy

P.S. My brother and his family also give their condolences.
