Joseph A. Mulligan, Jr. of Randolph, passed away August 1, 2025 at the age of 78.  Beloved husband for 57 years of his childhood sweetheart, Margaret “Peggy” (Freitas) Mulligan.  Loving father of Joseph A. Mulligan III and his partner Dickens Cheng, Craig Mulligan and his wife, Dr. Stacey Mulligan, Erin Mitchell and her husband Alan Mitchell, and Kristen Hanafin and her husband John Hanafin.  Cherished grandfather of Noah and Braeden Mulligan, Ada Mitchell, and Michael and Kolby Hanafin.  Also survived by his hunting and fishing buddy for over 60 years, Paul Rakoski.

A graduate of South Boston High School in 1964, Joe received his Associate Architectural Engineering degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology and his Bachelor of Architecture from Boston Architectural College.  He was a registered architect for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and was the owner of J.A. Mulligan Jr. Architects for over 25 years.  He also held partner positions at various architectural offices in the Boston area and was involved in the design of Star Market, Brigham’s and other retail chains.  He worked for LL Bean after his retirement.

Joe was a proud volunteer in public and community service.  He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America: Cub Scouts Pack 12 and Boy Scouts Troop 12.  He participated in the Marriage Preparation Program and was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Bernadette’s Church.  Joe was a Trustee of the Stetson School Fund and helped with fundraising and property management of Stetson Hall.  He was also involved with Randolph Public Schools, specifically the Building Study Committee, the School Facility Committee, and the Designer Selection Committee.  Joe was also a member of the Board of Examiners for the Quincy Building Department and was on the Board of Directors for Enable Inc. and Boston Architectural Center.

Joe was regarded as the “outdoor expert” by friends, family, and acquaintances with experience and interest in sharing knowledge about fishing, archery, gunning, hunting, camping, boating, and hiking.  He enjoyed hiking Mt. Lafayette, Mt. Washington, Mt. Monadnock, Blue Hills, and other ranges.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 10th from 2 – 5 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home, 134 So. Main St. (Rt. 28), Randolph.  Funeral from Hurley Funeral Home on Monday, August 11th at 9:45 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church in Randolph at 10:30 a.m.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  Private interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Randolph. Donations in Joe’s memory can be made to the Alzheimers Association via www.alz.org or VNA Care Hospice via https://vnacare.org/
