George Murphy OBIT PIC FINAL

George E. Murphy

Passed on October 8, 2024
Resident of Middleboro, MA

MURPHY, George Edward, of Middleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at the age of 92. Formerly of Milton, Brockton, and Holbrook, he was the son of the late Maurice and Marie (Sullivan) Murphy and the brother of the late Marie Ellen Murphy, all of Milton. George was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, F. Gloria (Ford) Murphy, and his favorite cousin, W. Laurence O’Neil, SJ, who was like a brother to him.

He is survived by his loving children: Edward (Nancy) Murphy of Holbrook, MA; Daniel (Terri) Murphy of Woodstock, GA; Christopher (Susan) Murphy of Cranston, RI; Neal Murphy of Cartersville, GA; and Julie (Richard) LaFond of Bridgewater, MA. He was a cherished “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren: Brendan, Elizabeth, Erin, and Benjamin (Katelyn) Murphy; Cheyenne (Dylan) Lee; Kelsey and Ryan Murphy; Ian and Daelyn Murphy; and Mathieu and Paul LaFond.

A proud double Eagle, George graduated from Boston College High School in 1949 and Boston College in 1953. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy through the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and served as a Naval Officer aboard the Cruiser USS Roanoke during the Korean Conflict, where he held several significant positions including Cryptographic Officer, Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Officer, and the Underway Officer of the Deck.

George’s professional career spanned over four decades, with roles at IBM (9 years), Knapp Shoes (22 years), and Reebok (9 years), where he made substantial contributions in Computer Operations and Management. He met his future wife, Gloria, while they were both employed at IBM. A whirlwind courtship led to their engagement just 5 weeks later.

Beyond his career, George was deeply involved in his community, serving on various town committees including the Holbrook School Committee and Finance Committee, as well as Chairing the Parks Department for many years. He also volunteered as a math tutor and a religious education teacher at St. Joseph’s School in Holbrook. A passionate supporter of youth sports, he coached and umpired Little League baseball and proudly sponsored a Senior League team named Murphy A.C., adorned in maroon and gold – the colors of Boston College. George was a life-long fan of Boston College football and hockey, and nothing made him happier than sharing his season tickets with family and friends.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to George’s dear friend and home healthcare aide, Edna Kidd, for her unwavering care, compassion and love throughout the years for both George and Gloria. Her kindness and attentiveness, especially in George’s final years, will never be forgotten.
