I knew Danny in junior high in Limestone, Maine. I was a Loring AFB base kid; when my father was sent to Vietnam, our family had to move off base to Limestone.

Danny Willette was one of those kids that many communities have: a gifted athlete whose God-given abilities transcends those of his peers. If you saw the movie Hoosiers, Danny was the Jimmy Chitwood of Limestone Junior High: the Phenom. One basketball game that I remember to this day illustrates this. That particular year our team was doing poorly. We may not have even won a game. But finally a game came along where we were down by one point with a few seconds to go.

I remember scrambling for a loose ball and calling a time out. Coach Salminen drew up a play in the huddle, and we brought the ball in. Only the play broke down. I had the ball at the top of the key, an opponent in my face, time was running out, when I looked up to see Danny running the baseline, holding his hand high, a look on his face that said "get me the ball." I somehow did, and he laid it up at the buzzer, winning the game.

That game was the turning point for our season. We started to gel as a team, gain confidence, and win games. By this one simple act, Danny showed the rest of us not just how to make a layup, or win a game, but how to face adversity, stay cool under pressure, and triumph.

When people pass, it is not unusual for a eulogist to say, "This community will never know the positive impact (the deceased) had on it." I am here to say that Danny Willette impacted my life more than anyone may have known.

Until now.

Rest In Peace, Danny, and we'll organize a pick up game one day.

I grew up with Danny in Limestone and we both played on the same Little League team (Braves). I was 9 when Danny was 12 and all of us first year; players all looked up to Danny for his leadership & friendship. Danny was a tremendous athlete in all sports; natural talent and tons of "God Given" ability. He was a great friend and I will truly miss his trips to Caribou where we could talk about memories from the past.
Rest in Peace Danny and please say hi to Dad (Scout) for me and give him a big "bear hug". I too will look forward to the day we can play ball in that big ball park in the sky.
