Marie E. (Gillis) Anderson

Marie Evelyn (Gillis) Anderson, 90, of Plymouth, MA, peacefully passed away on July 18, 2024. Marie spent the majority of her 90 years in Randolph, MA, where she was blissfully married for 57 years to the late (Deputy Fire Chief) Paul D. Anderson, Jr. She is survived by four children: Mary-Jo Anderson of Quincy, MA; Paul D. Anderson III (and wife Teresa) of Tampa, FL; Bruce Anderson of Berkley, MA; and Nancy Anderson of Plymouth, MA, and leaves five beloved grandchildren: Michael, Lindsey, Brandon, Paul IV, and Daniel. Marie is predeceased by her three sisters: Barbara Roche, Bernadette Argus, and Gertrude (Carroll) Nolan.

Marie graduated from Stetson High School in 1951 and began working as an executive secretary at Travelers Insurance in Boston. She married her childhood sweetheart soon thereafter and settled into raising their family. In 1958, Paul, his father, and uncle built the house in Randolph where the family, as well as Marie’s mother, would live for many decades.

In late mid-life, Marie developed a passion for videography. After seeing a professional family video in the late 80s, she decided “I can do better than that!” and began a wedding videography business. Her 4’11” stature didn’t deter her from carrying an industrial-size camera and crawling onto chairs to attain just the right angle, with her goal nothing short of the perfect product for the newlyweds. Marie continued videotaping weddings well into her senior years, to the amazement of many, maintaining the highest quality and caring.

Marie’s happiest hours were spent with family, particularly as “Grammy,” and golfing with her late husband. She was beloved by friends and neighbors for her soft-spoken, generous nature and fun-loving sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.

Visiting hours will be held at Hurley Funeral Home, 134 South Main Street, Randolph, MA, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service and interment. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Marie’s memory may be made to the T. Dustin Alward Memorial Fund (www.pffm.org) or the Dementia Society of America (www.dementiasociety.org).

Dear MJ, Nancy, and family,
I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved mother. The few times I was in her company, I remember her friendliness and warmth. She really was a delightful woman and I'm so happy she was part of your life for so many years. It's such a blessing. I believe that the world stops for a moment when a loved one passes. I think we are all given a chance to carry a wonderful trait of the beloved person forward to keep their spirit alive in us forever. I will try to be a warmer and friendlier person to honor those traits I saw in your mother.
Love,
Deb Mackerwicz
