Edward L. Viar

Edward Lee Viar of Braintree passed away suddenly on January 11th, 2024 at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife Laurie and daughter Liz, his siblings William, Robert and Mary Viar of Taunton as well as several nieces and nephews on both sides. After graduating from Bentley University he became a CPA and ran his own business for many years in Mansfield.

In his limited free time he loved driving his 1979 Volkswagen camper van to car shows and campouts, reading, sailing, or just being by the ocean down on Cape Cod or Nantucket. Recently, he and Laurie were able to spend 3 relaxing weeks in Hawaii, the first relaxing vacation in many years. He loved a good Scotch or craft beer while telling stories and laughing with any and everyone. Some of his favorite music and concerts to attend were those of Tower of Power but he also enjoyed the classics from the likes of Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, etc. He read The Lord of the Rings trilogy more times than even he could count, loved all things fantasy and sci-fi, especially Star Trek, and loved going to the premieres of the Harry Potter films with his daughter Liz. In the neighborhood he was known as the snowblower guy as he helped so many clear their driveways after snow storms with his giant machine.

He was so incredibly loved by his family, friends, clients and just about everyone who met him remembered his humor and kindness. No matter the situation, he always kept an upbeat attitude and tried to crack jokes to lighten the mood. So, tell a silly joke, have a good laugh and a glass of Scotch in honor of Ed. His contagious laugh, goofiness and pure selflessness will never be forgotten.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home, 134 So. Main St. (Rt. 28), Randolph on Saturday, January 20th from 11am-2-pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

An excerpt from The Return of the King, the final story in The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkein:
Pippin: I didn’t think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path… One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass… And then you see it.
Pippin: What? Gandalf?... See what?
Gandalf: White shores… and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: [smiling] Well, that isn’t so bad.
Gandalf: [softly] No… No it isn’t.

Uncle Ed gave me my first hardcover copy of the Hobbit when I was a child which I still have and cherish. I am grateful to him for so much, and that portal into the Tolkien world is one of them.

I am totally devastated at the loss of ED. I have known him since 1971,as my neighbor. He gave my son< Jonathan his first job when he got his CPA. Jonathan loved ED, and learned so very much from him. He truly loved Ed and enjoyed working and learning from him.I helped out in the office for a few months during tax season. What a Pleasure!! Ed made me feel welcome, always had a HUGE smile, and made me Laugh. I will Truly miss him.

Full of Life, Laughter and Love! Ed was so genuinely kind with his time and ALWAYS super fun to be around. Heaven is brighter because you're there, but we will use your memory to keep our days bright. May God enjoy your playfulness as much as we did.

Liz and Laurie, I am so sorry for your loss. It was always so clear that Ed loved you both so much. I remember when Liz and I were in middle school and he took us to the All American Rejects concert. He sat through the whole concert just to make sure Liz could see her favorite band. He will be deeply missed.

Ed was my account but also my friend for over 35 years. He always gave me sound advice ,but, there surely was going to also be a goofy story every time we spoke.Sometimes when I’d call him just to check in,he’d say at the end of our discussion, was there a question about my taxes or whatever that I called for,and I’d answer,No Ed ,this was a social call!Believe it or not,I really looked forward to that meeting every March to go over the past years business because we would end up laughing about some dumb thing one or both of us had done, sometimes over dinner.you will be sorely missed my friend!

Our family was shocked to learn of Ed's sudden passing. For the last 25 years Ed first has been our accountant, before continuing in that role and also becoming a good friend. I will not forget the many hours we spent together on our boat "Sales" sailing wherever the wind looked great. It led to good conversations and times together.

At all times, Ed had been very professional in his work, not just when the times were easier, but also after I retired at home in Switzerland, which caused audits and many questions from the IRS. His steady support in the face of those attacks, helped my attorneys to win all actions, including several audits and a case in front of Tax Court. Not all CPA's would have had the stomach for the three years it took and for that unwavering support Ed very much deserved my admiration, whenever we visited him.

Ed had a lot on his plate all the time, and we are all relieved, despite our sadness, that he was able to spend three full weeks with Laurie in Hawaii. We just wished that he could have fully enjoyed retirement, but it was not to be, and for that we are immensely sorry for his family.

We were shocked and very sorry to hear about Ed's passing. We have been his clients and he ours for 30 years. We could call him up with a quick question or he would be happy to sit down and go over things in detail. He could keep all of our companies and financial endeavors straight, as we signed tax return after tax return every year. We will miss him bringing his cars into the shop as well with Bill and Robert, always taking care of his family, telling a story of them when they were kids. Such a kind and thoughtful man, we will truly miss him.

We dearly loved Eddie for over thirty years. He was our accountant but also our friend. We loved hearing stories about Elizabeth as she was growing up. Laurie was in the office too and it was fun to catch up with her. We always think of Eddie when we catch sight of a VW bus. The tales were great about camping with it. It was wonderful that he and Laurie had a chance for three precious weeks in Hawaii.
Our thoughts are with Laurie and Liz. You two had the best! Thinking of you both.

I just heard about Ed and I am so sorry. You have my deepest sympathies. My partner and I found Ed’s ad in the pink pages when we were looking for a new accountant. We hired him on the spot because of his expertise and great energy. Over the years David and I came to consider Ed both a great accountant and friend. When David passed away several years ago Ed was always available with advice answers or a sympathetic ear. The community lost a great guy.
