Silvio 'Sonny' Mercuri
Silvio “Sonny” Mercuri passed November 14, 2023. Born in Roxbury, MA, in 1933, he was a resident of Avon, MA, for more than 54 years. Sonny played football with the Roxbury Red Raiders and was a member of the Marconi Club. A Korean war veteran, Sonny owned and operated beauty salons in Boston, ensuring his children never had to pay for a haircut well into adulthood.
Preceded in death by his wife Norma (Roman) Mercuri, Sonny’s family will remember him as a role model and a community leader in his adopted hometown of Avon, MA. Sonny served as Avon’s Parks & Recreation commissioner for more than twenty years and led the creation of the town’s memorable ski trips and summer youth programs. He coached Little League baseball teams to several championships, served as a member of the town’s Council on Aging, and with St Michael’s Church parish council. He was an active member of the Avon VFW and Knights of Columbus Council 5683.
Sonny parented by example and helped to raise his children, Kevin, Denise (Mercuri), Tedesco, and Rick, to feel loved and admired. His four grandchildren, Daniel Tedesco and Kayla (Tedesco) Evans, Carolyn & Nicholas Mercuri, and two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Thomas Tedesco, provided him with unlimited joy and pride. He is survived by his sister, Lois (Mercuri) Trocki, and by his late-life companion, Barbara Taylor, who afforded Sonny an abundance of love and care in his later years.
Beloved by his nieces and nephews, Uncle Sonny was always ready to ignore osteoarthritis pain to enjoy a day of skiing, a round of golf, or a bocce tournament.
Funeral from the Hurley Funeral Home, 134 So. Main St. (Rt. 28), Randolph, on Saturday, November 18th at 9:15am followed by a funeral mass at St. Michael Church in Avon at 10am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 17th from 4-7pm. Interment private. Late US Army National Guard Veteran. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonny’s memory can be made to the Veteran’s Administration (dav.org/donate) or Parkinson’s Foundation (Parkinson.org/donate).

Sonny you were the gentlest and kindest man I've ever know. Humble to the core and as loyal as the day is long. It's been many years since I've seen your smiling face, but one that I Will never forget. Despite our distance, you have always walked my mental hallways. You will be be forever missed and most of all loved.
