William J. Swanton

William J. (Bill) Swanton, of Holbrook, passed away on October 26th, 2021 at the age of 93. Born in Boston to John R. and Mildred (Wildes) Swanton, Bill graduated from Milton High School in 1947 and attended Franklin Tech Institute. He served for two years as MP in the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC, and later worked in engineering drafting.

Beloved husband of Jerane “Jerry” Swanton for 68 years, Bill was the loving father of Michael Swanton and his wife Susan, of Shirley; Cheryl Swanton, of Woonsocket, RI; and Karen Machado and her husband Leon, of Attleboro. He was the devoted brother of Kenneth Swanton and his wife Loretta, of Milton; and the late Elizabeth Temple, John Swanton, Donald Swanton, and Frederick Swanton. Bill was the cherished grandfather of Christopher Machado and his wife Candice, of Attleboro; Kimberly Flagg and her husband Zachary, of Brookline, NH; Kayla Machado, of Attleboro; and Matthew Swanton, of Winchendon. One of his greatest joys was becoming a great-grandfather to Oliver and Ainsley Machado, and Cora, Harvey and Remington Flagg, whom he adored.

Bill found joy in every single day. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family, and enjoyed his annual trips with “The Boys in the Woods”. An avid Red Sox fan, he rarely missed a game from the comfort of his den. He had a great fascination for airplanes, spending hours building models, and enjoyed big band music.

Bill was an incredibly thoughtful and generous person, taking every chance to express his love to those he cared deeply for. He was a man admired by everyone he met, and adored by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom he passed many of his wonderful traits.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, November 1st from 4-7pm, at Hurley Funeral Home, 127 S. Franklin St. in Holbrook. Funeral from the Hurley Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 2nd at 9:15am, followed by a funeral mass at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Church, 153 S. Franklin St, Holbrook. Interment at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree. Late US Army Veteran. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

I met Bill over40 years ago, what a blessing that was. He was a man who you wanted as a friend. He showed you such love, and caring from day one, We were a group who met thru the ladies of Women’s world..he quickly became an integral part of this group. Our dinners with the “Guys” were always special and he was the reason it was like that. He immediately bonded with the husbands and enjoyed our evenings out..he always had a smile and a special hug for all of us. The world was a better place because of him. R.I.P.my friend. Lunch will never be the same without you. Xo
