Ruth M. Fernandes Quinlan

Ruth M. Fernandes Quinlan of Brockton passed away with her family by her side on July 30, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Manual and Ethel (McGovern) Fernandes of Randolph, predeceased by siblings Alice (Fernandes) Quinn, Mary, Albert, Kenneth, and Eugene Fernandes, and is survived by sister-in-law’s, Pauline (Derry) Fernandes of San Jose, California and Margaret (Doherty) Quinlan of Brockton.

Ruth was a student at Holy Trinity in Boston, graduate of Stetson High School in Randolph and later educated at the Boston Conservatory of Music, studying violin, opera, piano and Italian. There, she trained in classical voice with the esteemed Grace Hunter. An award-winning seamstress, Ruth crafted clothing, home goods, and heirloom Christening gowns for many, and created wedding dresses for both daughters and daughters-in-law.

She worked at the Randolph Savings Bank, Saftlers of Whitman, and later at The Mill Shop in Taunton, and Piano Revival of Brockton. Along with her passion for music and sewing, she enjoyed cooking, traveling with family, gardening, and caring for her pets.

Ruth is lovingly remembered by her children, Janice Quinlan, Judy Wood and her husband, Michael of Foxboro, G. Joseph Quinlan, Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Windsor Locks, CT and predeceased by son, James E. Quinlan of Hanover, husband of Susan Peterson Quinlan. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Due to COVID19 and limits on gatherings services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, where Ruth was a devoted donor.
