Dirk J. van Gulden

Dirk J. van Gulden, 66, a cherished father, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle and friend passed away on Tuesday July 21st surrounded by loved ones reminiscing stories of a life well-lived while listening to his favorite songs as he left this earth. Born in Cambridge in 1954, he kept roots in Framingham until moving to Lowell, MA 25 years ago.

Dirk is survived by his devoted girlfriend, Elizabeth Matara Flynn, loving daughter, Lindsay H. Duggan (Joseph), his doting granddaughters Abigail G. and Paige R. Duggan. Loving uncle to Laura R. Johnson and Christopher D. Johnson, Great-Uncle to Ishmael T. Johnson (Abril) and Kathryn G. Oliver. Dear brother of the late Frances Johnson and the late Norman van Gulden. He is predeceased by his father Leo A. van Gulden and mother Ruth Carroll van Gulden.

Dirk enjoyed many pastimes and passions in his life. A musician first and foremost he was a talented bassist and was a part of many a band over the years and attended innumerable concerts. His love for music was vast and it is safe to say he was the greatest Beatles fan. He was an avid Boston sports fan and while he never perfected the game, as most never do, he enjoyed a round of golf with friends and loved ones. Later in life, Dirk was bitten by the travel bug when he met Elizabeth. They traveled around the world and attended numerous plays, musicals, and concerts together. Dirk became an accomplished nurse later in his life in a naturally chosen career change that fit his caring, patient character.

Dirk was a devoted, supportive dad who taught his daughter the virtue of kindness and humor leading by example. He also had a true calling as a Grampa. Dirk adored his Granddaughters, attending soccer and baseball games, he was a playground enthusiast and often surprised his girls with a trip to a show or circus.

He will be remembered for his quiet, gentle demeanor. His optimism, wit, and humor never wavered during his illness. He remained selfless and always tried to put others before himself. He will be greatly missed.

Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home, 127 So. Franklin St. (Rt. 37), Holbrook on Saturday, August 1st from 10am-12pm. Covid-19 precautions will be in place. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dirk's memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478 Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or at www.cancer.org.

Lindsay,

Your dad was a lovely man who joined our family with ease. We will remember him for his supreme kindness and for making Elizabeth so happy on all they did.

You wrote a beautiful tribute to your dad. Stay strong and hold onto your memories.

I met Dirk in 8th grade, had the pleasure of his friendship and musical collaboration for some years thereafter. I am heartbroken to have lost him far too soon. He was the best and we could have done with many more years of him.

I first knew Dirk in high school, he played bass in so many different bands with so many wonderful friends, we share a love of the beatles, he was the talented but quiet guy like George Harrison, so sweet and kind. He wore shorts to a redsox game on a gloomy, rainy day while the rest of us were freezing with jeans on lol. To this day he brings a smile to my face. So sorry for your loss. He is missed.

Dirk,
I will always cherish the music we made together for all those years! Phenomenal! But, the other side of you, full of compassion, warmth, accepting, and humble were what set you apart from so many others.

Thanks for Big World of Trouble, Wendy's favorite WTW song.

Say hello to Muddy and the Wolf for me!

Though I hadn't seen Dirk in years, we were good high school buddies and early band mates (Boston Local). Dirk was an exceptionally talented bass player and natural musician. He was also a great guy who I'm sure never had an enemy in his life. I saw him a few times in later years, but not for along time now. I am very saddened to hear of his passing!
There is now a terrific rhythm section in Heaven if Dirk and Dave Murtagh are jamming together again! R.I.P. Dirk!

and enjoyed life together. Time will heal, but Dirk’s kindness will
forever remain in Liz’s heart. Sending much love to Liz since I cannot make it to the wake. Leslie Kilgore
