Evelyn 'Joan' (Vasconcellos) Hardy

Evelyn “Joan” (Vasconcellos) Hardy passed away peacefully on May 4, 2021. Loving Mother of James M. Hardy and loving companion Mary Ann McDonnell of Scituate and Mary A. (Hardy) Swett of Middleborough. Loving Nana to Ryan Hardy of Lakeville, Keith Hardy and his wife Cadi of Carver, Nikky White and Ed Spaulding of Middleborough, Charles Swett Jr of Middleborough, and William Swett and his fiancé Haley of Middleborough. She was Nana to her great-grandchildren Grayson Beal of Middleborough and Wyatt Hardy of Carver, along with an expected October addition of great-granddaughter Emerie Shay Swett of Middleboro.

Joan was born on October 5, 1932 in Boston. She was predeceased by her parents Anthony Vasconcellos and Mary “Mae” (McQuire) and her sister Ann L. (Vasconcellos) Turner, and former husband Walter R Hardy. Joan was raised in East Boston and Winthrop, graduating High School at 16 and entering Salem State Teacher College. After marriage, she moved to Holbrook in 1956 where she raised her two children and resided until her passing.

Joan taught First Grade in Brockton’s McKinley and Brookfield Schools for 36 years. Upon her retirement, Joan enrolled in computer courses at the Moakley Center in Bridgewater. She then took what she learned and as a volunteer, created the first computer Lab for the Brookfield Community School, were she stayed as a volunteer for another 10 years. In 1999, she was recognized for her contributions to the Brockton Community School Program by being awarded the Albert N. Baroncelli Award.

Joan was a musician, mother, teacher, volunteer, and a loyal friend. She had many titles: Sister, Daughter, Mom, Teacher: But her two favorite were Nana and AJ. She was AJ to her nieces and Nana to her favorite people. Even the friends of her grandchildren called her Nana.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home, 127 So. Franklin St. (Rt. 37), Holbrook on Friday, May 7th from 4-7pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 8th. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the burial at Union Cemetery, Holbrook at 11:45am. Covid-19 precautions will be in place.

Mrs. Hardy was my first grade teacher at Brookfield. She was a wonderful lady and great teacher. May her memory be forever a blessing.
