William E. O'Brien Jr

William “Bill” Edward O’Brien Jr., of Holbrook, passed away April 10, 2020 at the age of 80 after a long courageous battle with cancer. It is no surprise that Bill was very proud to follow in the footsteps of his father and spent his career in the printing industry. Growing up in Cambridge and settling in Holbrook, he was a 54-year member of BPOE, a former member of the Knights of Columbus and served in the National Guard.

An avid lover of travel, his journeys included visiting the Amish Country in Pennsylvania for beef jerky and spices, travelling to distant countries of Ireland, Egypt and Vietnam thereby obtaining the nickname “The Happy Wanderer”. For those of you who knew Bill, every day was an adventure and history lesson. His frequent visits to Castle Island, the Donut King and area cemeteries made him a self-proclaimed Ancestral Cemetery Documentation record keeper.

Beloved husband of 60 years, he is survived by his wife Annette O’Brien (Mangano). Loving father of Elizabeth and life partner Brian Donahue of Stoughton; William E. O’Brien III and wife Tina of Holbrook; Frances Nassar and husband Khaled of Holbrook; and Shawn O’Brien and wife Regina of Pembroke. Cherished Papa of Sarah and wife Evelyn, Courtney and partner Alex, Justin, Emily, Meagan, Zachary, Halle and Lucas. Great-grandfather of Gabriel and Krysten. Son of the late William E. O’Brien Sr. and Elizabeth O’Brien (Rivers). Survived by his siblings Robert and wife Kathy, Paul and wife Joanne, Kenneth and wife Diane, and his late siblings Ronnie, Alan, Cheryl and late daughter-in- law Odessa. Extended family including his mother-in-law Frances Mangano, in-laws Joseph Mangano and wife Kay, Sandra Dell’Isola and Janice O’Brien. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

With respect to Bill’s wishes, current services will be private until a Mass and celebration of his life can take place at a time deemed safe for all loved ones to attend. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to the South Shore Health Foundation, c/o South Shore VNA 55 Fogg Road, S. Weymouth, MA 02190 or online at SouthShoreHealth.org/Evergreen.

A great person and friend - with a sometimes slightly twisted sense of humor (toilet paper usage to his kids seems kind of appropriate to today's events). His children are a living testimony of what a great guy he is. Netts you picked a winner ... or maybe it was Bill who picked a winner - you're both winners. Rest in Peace Bill, keep watch over your family (should be the easiest job you ever had). All my love to the O'Brien clan - stay safe, stay strong - love you all for always.

For my Papa, I remember you taking Courtney and I to the airplane show and thinking how cool it was that you could explain what moves they would make before they would make them. I remember the trip to Amish country with you and Nana, and the day trip to NYC. *Castle Island* I will miss your words of wisdom and encouragement during our weekly chats. I feel like life is a never ending journey and even though you crossed the bridge, your journey has just begun. Thank you for so many memories and someday, there will be more. I love you Papa.
