George Cormey

CORMEY, George, age 84, of Randolph, MA passed away on March 11, 2021 at his home. He was born October 31, 1936 in Brockton, MA to George and Marie (Helm) Cormey. He attended St. Anselm’s College 1954-58, and was an Army Reservist with Battery “B”, 5th Artillery 1958-59. He married Alma Robison on June 14, 1969. In 1980, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stonehill College. He worked as a civil engineer for the Town of Randolph for thirty-two years (the longest-running town employee in the Engineering Department) until his early retirement in 1999.

A two-time Boston Marathon runner, George kept busy (and competitive!) with numerous Senior Olympics track and field events ie. javelin, shotput and hammer throw. He was a multiple winner in the Eastern Regional Masters, USATF Masters and as a member of Chelmsford’s Twilight Throwers.

A life-long Randolph resident, George enjoyed yardwork, tennis, American political-science and complaining about the woman holding up the line at Shaws. His favorite comedic performers were impressionist Rich Little and B-movie horror host, The Son of Svengoolie. He was also an avid fan of Jeopardy, Lt. Columbo and Turner Movie Classics’ Western and Film Noir series.

He is survived by his sons, Theodore and Timothy, his sister, Barbara White (ninety-nine, soon to be a hundred in July!), his daughter-in-law Kathy (Hogan) Cormey, and granddaughters Emma and Christine, plus multiple nieces and nephews.

A private burial service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Cards and flowers can be mailed to Hurley Funeral Home, 134 S. Main Street, Randolph MA 02368. Or donations in George’s memory can be sent to Mount Saviour Monastery, 231 Monastery Road, Pine City, NY 14871.

George was my neighbor and a friend. We both spent many hours doing yard work, which we loved. George would come over to my house for barbecues and holiday parties. He partisapated in a 4th of July parade, and was on a prize winning float that the Randolph Garden club built in my front yard. My husband Joel and I will miss George. May he rest in peace.

Uncle George has been and always will be my favorite uncle. He was younger than our other uncles and, as my sister Diane has said, was always fun to be around. His witty sense of humor and mischievous grin - always accompanied by a chuckle and twinkle in his eye - are what I remember most when I think of him. Our mother, his oldest sister Jeanne, adored her younger brother, and it was always a good time when the two of them got together. I will miss him dearly.

Every time I saw Uncle George he was smiling. The last time I was in Boston we tried to meet up but we only got as far as a telephone conversation. I was happy to hear his distinctive voice. He was a faithful brother to my mom, Barbara. He called her almost every week. They spoke as brother and sister about their lives now and in the past as only siblings can. He and Aunt Alma gave my mom her favorite nephews, Tim and Teddy. I send my prayers to all my cousins, family and friends for their loss. He will always be remembered by me with his pitchfork floating personality.

My sincere condolences to the Cormey Family. Mr. Cormey was my baseball coach one season in South Randolph Little League. I believe that Timothy was on the team. Coincidentally, George was friends with my Uncle Danny Griffin, who had passed away in the early 1970’s. I am glad to have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cormey and I will always remember his kind and compassionate personality. Thoughts and prayers for your family.
