Ruth L. (Flood) Given

On the morning of October 26th, Ruth Louise (Flood) Given, died at the age of 94. Ruth was born to Robert and Louise (Jacobs) Flood on September 3, 1926. She was the beloved sister of Edna & Helen, predeceased by brothers Robert & Paul and sisters Alice & Grace. She was a graduate of Avon Middle High School. She married James Given, and in 1955 they opened Avon Hardware. When James passed in 1975, Ruth ran the business with her 2 children, her daughter, the late Louise (Given) Rakutis and son, William Given. Ruth loved her store, and was known for her quick knowledge of hardware and her kind spirit. Ruth also loved her garden which she still tended into her 90’s. She also loved to read and knit...but her passion was taking care of the grounds at the Avon Cemetery. At 91 she was hospitalized and couldn’t wait to be discharged so she could get back on her John Deere. Ruth was a longtime member of the Avon Baptist Church...and nobody could be more excited for their Ham & Bean Supper! In her later years, she loved traveling with her companion, the late, Buddy Wass. Whether it was a weekend trip to the Cape, or breakfast after Sunday mass...Ruth and Buddy were inseparable. Ruth was the loving grandmother to Paul Rakutis and his wife Suzanne, of Avon, Amy Belviy and her husband Dana, of Florida, the late James “Jamie” Rakutis, Robbie Hayward and James Hayward of Florida. She is the great-grandmother to Brittany, Zachary, Tyler and his wife Kellie, Keera, Cody, Kyle, Marilynn and Andrew. She was the great-great-grandmother to Brayden, Brody & Emmy.

Visiting hours will be held at the Avon Baptist Church on Monday, November 2nd from 10:30-11:30am followed by a funeral service at 11:30am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment Avon Cemetery. Covid-19 restrictions will be in place. Arrangements handled by the Hurley Funeral Home, Holbrook.

Dear Bill and the entire Given Family; please accept my condolences
On the loss of your Mother/Grandmother/Great Grandmother. I had lived in Avon for 65 years until recently and knew Ruth very well.
What a blessing it was for her family to have her for 94 years.
Ruth would also be at all the events going on in the town.
Rest In Peace Ruth..

I have such fond memories of Auntie Ruth, visiting her home and the hardware store, and sharing holiday celebrations. We traveled up from VA to attend her service. We wouldn’t have missed it and wish my mom (Ruth’s sister, Helen) could have been there. Ruth was her rock after our dad died. My mom loved helping her in the store and in the cemetery, and Ruth always provided trusted advice and guidance. Listening to the stories shared by friends and neighbors on Monday showed us how many lives she touched. May God comfort those she left behind, and may she rest in God’s peace.
